Musings on making your quilt like our shop samples.
The first decision will be fabric selection. Our suggestion is to choose a piece of fabric from your stash or from the store shelf that you really like based on the colors in the fabric (you do not have to like the design for you are only using this fabric as a tool for choosing colors). This should be a fabric that has a lot of different colors (not a tone on tone). Using this fabric as a guide, choose a minimum of 16 quarter yard pieces of fabric (regular or fat). You will not need all 16 to get started. You can choose as few as 2 to get started and then add others as you go along. These quarter yards will be used to make your blocks and to frame them in the log cabin setting. You do not have to use the “color theme” fabric in the quilt. We used our theme fabric on the back of our “house in the center” shop sample and for sashing on the other one. Neither of our samples have borders but if you wanted a larger quilt, you could certainly add one or more borders to either quilt. If you choose to make your quilt like our sample with the house in the middle, you will need fabric for that. We will give you some fabric requirements for various elements (sashing, backing, binding, etc.) of the shop samples.
